Turning Away or Moving Forward?

Turning Away or Moving Forward?

If a picture says a thousand words, what might this one say?

Am I turning my back on something #OVER2020

Am I standing still with fear, disbelief or contemplation. #ITS2020

Am I ready, moving forward, eyes on the prize. #2020VISION

You can’t deny that 2020 has definitely been an EVENTFUL year. (PS It’s not over)

As we embrace this final day of Summer now is the best time for self-reflection, awareness, & mindfulness. Ask yourself:

  • Am I looking to put 2020 behind me after all of the crazy that I’ve experienced because I want to go back to normal?
  • Am I looking forward to 2021 because I chose to be here for 2020 adjusting, learning, growing and preparing?

News flash, there is no going back. Time keeps moving onward. Like the seasons change is inevitable. Because 2020 isn’t over yet, there is still time for you to take control, instead of allowing 2020 to happen to you.

Each season has its own symbolic meanings. Fall is representative of the following:

1. Change

As the Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “The only constant is change.” As we stop to take in Autumn/Fall, we are reminded through our senses of sight, touch, smell, taste and sound; that our bodies, minds, and surroundings are always developing. The impermanence of life emphasizes how vital it is to embrace the present. By doing so, we can savor what we have before it is gone.

2. Mystery

Thanks to the changing nature of life, each and every day presents us with new mysteries. From the crisp fall air, to Indian summer and the beautiful colors of the changing leaves, all personify the unknowns. Accepting those unknowns gives us the capacity to live life to the fullest, to be ready for what’s next.

3. Preservation

Autumn represents the preservation of life and its basic necessities. The animals prepare for the winter by storing food and creating cozy hibernation spaces. Farmers work on their fall harvest by collecting a reserve of crops. We tend to retreat indoors and focus on cultivating a safe and comforting home. For example, we break out the down comforters, flannel sheets or maybe you put throw blankets on the couch. Collect wood for the fireplaces or grab propane for the outdoor firepits. Autumn gives us a chance to reconnect with ourselves as we preserve our safe havens.

4. Protection

We exercise self-protection by wearing layers, sweaters, scarfs and warm fabrics. We tend to focus on our health by boosting our immunity through fitness & nutrition. Ultimately, autumn doubles as practice for heightened awareness of yourself and surroundings.

5. Comfort

In the same vein as protection, comfort is strongly symbolized by fall. Amidst the dropping temperatures, we take time to find comfort in our shoes, clothes and homes. Creating a serene and snug space is one of the best perks of autumn. Like a cozy spot for reading, journaling and sipping on tea. Fall gives you a chance to learn more about yourself i.e. what makes you feel warm and safe.

6. Balance

During the autumnal equinox day and night are the same length. As a result, ancient cultures associate this day with the concept of balance. Meaning entering into Autumn grants us a chance to harmonize with the Earth and tap into the balance within us. If you can find the time I recommend going to watch the sunset. It’s a great time to set your intentions. Literally sit with yourself (not your phone) and take stock of the past few seasons. Take a Journal with you and answer the following:

  • What have I accomplished?
  • What have I gained?
  • What new tools will keep me moving forward?
  • Finally write down what I am proud of.

No matter what happens in our lives and around us, each day we are gifted with life it is an opportunity for us to paint the picture and the narrative we want it to have. So embrace the new season. Are you turning away or moving forward?!
